A Marches Meander
Twisty A488 through southwest Shropshire, this is the land that time forgot, into Powys at Knighton, over the hill to the Crossgates cafe, fast blast to Rhayader. The Elan Valley is very pretty and the road is very twisty. You won’t want this to end. Fast open roads back. 150 miles of magic.

- Directions
- Leave Shrewsbury across the Welsh Bridge, at roundabout take first exit and go straight on on the A488. Stay on the very twisty A488 through the Hope Valley, keep going until you come to Knighton. Left then right, up the hill and keep going until you reach the A44, take a right, the Crossgates is about a mile. Food and fuel… Head for Rhayader, straight through the town to the Elan Valley, then up up up into the hills – twisty this, you’ll think you must have got lost but no you really haven’t, it’s just very remote, the views are awesome, over the little bridge, up the hill and turn left (very important, that). Just go straight on following the signs for Devils Bridge. Then take a right headed for Dyffryn Castell, then right again for Llanidloes, Newtown, use the Welshpool bypass. Beware of morons pulling out on the road from Welshpool town centre. At the roundabout go straight on up the A483. You’ll like this bit :D . At Llanymynech, when you cross the river (Severn) look for the turn on the right for Shrewsbury, the B4396, it’s well hidden and easy to overshoot as it’s hidden by buildings. Stay on this road through Knockin to the A5, take a right turn back to Shrewsbury.
